Toray Industries Reports Q1 2024 Carbon Fiber Production Capacity, Exceeding 64,000 Metric Tons with Untapped Potential
On June 6th, Toray Industries Inc. unveiled the latest production capacity figures for its product line as of March 31, 2024, on their official website. The data indicates that Toray Industries' global carbon fiber production capacity is estimated at 64,000 metric tons. Given that the company's carbon fiber facilities in South Korea, the United States, and France initiated expansion in the latter half of 2023, with production expected to commence by 2025, there was no increase in capacity for the year 2023. In addition, Toray Industries' high-performance resin materials capacity has reached 745,000 metric tons, with an additional 20,000 metric tons of acrylic fiber capacity based in Japan.
The following table reflects the current global carbon fiber production capacity and distribution for Toray Industries as of March 2024. Compared to the previous year, there has been no change in the company's global capacity for both standard (small tow) and large tow carbon fibers.
In 2023, Toray Industries had a planned expansion of 7,200 metric tons for small tow carbon fiber, which is anticipated to become operational by 2025. Upon full operation, Toray Industries' total global carbon fiber production capacity is projected to reach 71,000 metric tons annually. Currently, the second-ranked carbon fiber enterprise worldwide is Zhongfu Shenying Company, with a total capacity of 28,500 metric tons and an additional 30,000 metric tons per year under construction. Consequently, once Toray Industries' new capacities are fully operational, its annual carbon fiber production capacity of 71,000 metric tons will further cement its position as the global leader in the carbon fiber industry.
As of March 2024, Toray Industries' global resin production capacity is approximately 745,000 metric tons. This includes 497,000 metric tons of ABS resin (with 72,000 metric tons at the Chiba Plant in Japan and 425,000 metric tons at TPM in Malaysia), 52,000 metric tons of nylon resin (located in Nagoya, Japan), 86,000 metric tons of PBT resin (with 23,000 metric tons in Ehime, Japan and 63,000 metric tons at TBPR in Malaysia), 27,600 metric tons of PPS resin (with 19,000 metric tons at the Tokai Plant in Japan and 8,600 metric tons at TAK in South Korea), 2,000 metric tons of liquid crystal polyester resin (in Ehime, Japan), and 80,000 metric tons of PET resin (at PNR in Indonesia).
